Due to the extreme reign of terror which existed within coal company towns and the use of violence by officers of the company in order to maintain their exclusive control, revolt was a natural and inevitable result. By denying to the miners any access to legal justice or protection by the government or politicians, the coal barons further increased the likelihood that the miners would be forced to turn to violence in order to receive justice and equality. Finally, by providing the miners with extensive examples of the power of violent actions, the companies actually trained their own opponents. |
