On Responsibility

news, and even in Congress. Everyone is worried about the influences on kids today, whether it be TV, film, or peers. However, it seems to me they fail to look at themselves as influences. If "little Billy" is told that the state did not send a check this month, so when he steals money, it is the states fault, why would he think otherwise? That is just a hypothetical situation, but the point is clear. A child who sees adults blaming their peers for their own deeds, is bound to do the same.

The plan is simple: stop the frivolous lawsuits; take more responsibility for our own actions. When we do something stupid, we need to acknowledge that it was our fault. It was common belief among ancient philosophers (whom one could argue had a firm and applicable understanding of morality) that we are responsible not only for our individual acts, but also for our moral character. This is what must be changed. We cannot walk through life blaming others, simply because they are "blamable". Do we beat up little children, simply because we can? Nor should we sue a corporation, simply because we can.
