Brief History of the Siphnians and Their Treasury

The Siphnian Treasury at Delphi is one of the most elaborately decorated pieces of architecture in the Sanctuary of Delphi. The Treasury was discovered in 1894 and although there are no inscriptions to identify the Treasury specifically as that of the Siphnians, it is believed strongly to have been contributes to the Sanctuary of Apollo by the Siphnians. It is a temple-like piece of Archaic architecture and is the second treasury on the south side of the Sacred Way as one ascends to the temple of Apollo. The Ionic building is simple with dimensions of 8.55 x 6.12 meters, but the relief sculpture that adorns the pediment, frieze, and columns is of a rich attic-ionic style. The base of the building is made from local Delphi limestone which Daux believes was constructed by local craftsmen because of the superstructure has distinguishing chisel marks and the Delphi craftsmen would not have used this tool (Tomlinson, 260). Also, Daux discovered that the base is not one cohesive unit, but in fact made up of two parts-the base of the treasury itself and then the base of the entrance way from the west end of the building (Tomlinson, 261).
