The dialogue between the subjects three paintings by Spanish artists living in Spain during the Golden Age and the wall upon which they are hung is to relate a period of history in Spain from the middle of the sixteenth century to the very beginning of the nineteenth century. The paintings are El Greco's Christ on the Cross with Landscape (1605-10), Velazquez's The Count Duke of Olivares on Horseback (1638), and Goya's Autumn (1786-7). The characters that will be speaking are the subjects of these paintings and they are: from El Greco-Christ, from Velazquez-Count Duke of Olivares, and from Goya-a peasant woman, a noble woman (or lady of quality), and a noble man (who shall establish his nobility through his conversation). The point of view from each of these characters is purely fictitious with historical intent and especially the view of the character of Christ in this conversation is to illuminate the religious quality of Spanish culture and not to represent a universal view of Christ, thus there is no offense intended as to the reader's religious belief.

The three pieces of art have just been placed on the wall of a gallery in a museum, which one is unimportant, and the time is modern day. Each subject is still alive within the canvas of the paintings, including the crucified Christ, which for the purpose of this exercise, is eternally living in the moment
