The singling out of black America, specifically African Americans, is done because they represent the race that has been most severely oppressed in American society. The Native Americans were for the most part run off their land and completely redirected into an American way of life. The African Americans though, have experienced a unique history; from slavery to freedom, they have battled oppression to attain a place in America, and are constantly on the forefront of minority movements to create a balanced environment for America. There is no bias meant in any way to the singling out of this racial group, for Hispanic Americans and Asian Americans have also fought pioneeringly to establish a place for themselves, but the African American movement has been the leading factor in the awareness of a need to create in the land of opportunity, also, a land of equality as the Constitution had promised.
The need to determine where in fact the most opportunity has been granted is a human need. A nation about to move into the twenty-first century should be able to look back at a set point so that it may move forward. Whatever the status of Equal Opportunity Employment is now, there remains the potential from study to see what has been done and what needs to be done. I am concerned with making myself more aware of the situation and hope that this study can present some clarity as to the |
