integration are all important issues to be considered. They all lead to successful implementations along with another important factor: the need for trained individuals. To make GIS technology more widely available, we will have to find competent personnel. Although the demand for personnel is accelerating, there are not enough personnel to satisfy current research, development, education and operational needs. There are also shortages of educational institutions to provide the training. This must be a primary focus for ensuring the future development of GIS technology.

As we know, the applications of geographic information systems are vast. They may be used to determine emergency vehicle routes for fire departments, or to determine the storm impacts and sea level rise. Whatever its application, it is generally related to some portion of the earth's surface.

Geographic information systems can be viewed as another way in which we can improve our understanding of the earth. The strong possibilities of future developments within geographic information systems, is likely to increase our geographic knowledge beyond the levels of today, leading to greater prospects and developments of spatial information.
